Why avoid submarine cables?
There are five main reasons why fishing vessels should avoid being in zones where they might hook a submarine telecommunication cable :
- Damage to a submarine cable may cause serious problems with trans-world communication, putting human life, trade and international business at risk,
- submarine cables are supplied by high voltage current of up to several thousand volts : on average, this might be 3-4000 V for a trans-atlantic cable, and less than 1000 V for a UK-France cable
ATTEMPTING TO CUT A CABLE MAY RESULT IN DEATH.
- Repairing a submarine cable damaged due to hooking may be very expensive,
- When a fishing vessel hooks a cable, a great deal of time and expensive equipment may be lost,
